Democracy is founded on a very simple but powerful idea: government of the people, by the people and for the people. It is more than just a system—it is the collective voice of the people which empowers citizens to shape their future, demand accountability, and participate in governance. Democracy allows us to choose our leaders and participate in the decisions that affect our lives. It guarantees our fundamental rights and freedoms. It is not just the work of leaders—it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that every voice matters and every person has a stake in shaping society. As we mark Democracy Day, we are reminded that freedom and responsibility must walk hand in glove. Democracy is vulnerable and to preserve democracy, we must foster a culture of accountability and transparency. Every citizen has a role to play—from voting to volunteering, from questioning to whistleblowing. We must all become guardians of democracy. On this day, we honour the courage of those who fought for these rights—and recommit ourselves to preserving them. We celebrate the shared commitment that binds our nation together. Let us strengthen the values of honesty, fairness, and accountability today and every day. Together, we can build a system that reflects the will and dignity of the people.
